" RCT is an option of treatment when you don't want to remove the tooth. "

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT (RCT)

RCT is a treatment sequence which involves removal of infected pulp (nerve) tissue, subsequent cleaning and shaping of root canals and filling those decontaminated canals with inert bio-compatible material to protect it from future microbial invasion.

In endodontics department, RCT is the most commonly performed procedure. Other than that endodontic retreatment, endodontic surgery (Apicoectomy) are also included.

When RCT is required?

Root canal treatments are needed for cracked tooth, a deep cavity or issues from previous fillings.

Few SYMPTOMS that means you might need RCT -

  • Severe pain while chewing or biting
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot & cold food.
  • Pimples on gum
  • Chipped or cracked tooth
  • Swollen or tender gum
  • Deep decay

PROCEDURE -

- First dentist removes all infected and diseased pulp tissues from root canal with small files under local anesthesia.

- Next dentist cleans, shapes & decontaminate the hollow area with files and irritation solution.

- Then tooth is filled with inert rubber like material (gutta-percha) with adhesive cement to seal canal completely.

How painful?

It is thought to be very painful procedure but all the pain comes from the infection or inflammation of the tooth. RCT is a PAIN-RELIEVING treatment.

Getting RCT done in a named clinic by a trained dentist is relatively painless and extremely effective.

Advantages -

- You will be back to smiling, biting & chewing with ease in no time.

- No more sensitivity or pain

- Natural appearance

- Protecting other teeth from excessive wear or strain

RCT can be completed in SINGLE SITTING, two or three sittings depending upon the condition of the tooth & patient's personal circumstances.

A CROWN or CAP on the tooth after RCT provides reinforcement ,restores it's health & functionality and improves its suvival rate.

The ALTERNATIVE of RCT include no treatment or tooth extraction.

Endodontic treatment COST less than alternative having the tooth extracted. An extracted tooth must be replaced with IMPLANT to restore chewing function which is way MORE EXPENSIVE than RCT.

Around 9 out of 10 RCT survive more than 8-10 years. RCT is generally safe & effective with success rate more than 95% .

Like any other medical treatment RCT can occasionally fail normally due to loose crown, tooth fracture or new decay.
