Orthodontics

ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT

Orthodontics is a specialization in dentistry that deals with the treatment of malocclusion ( incorrect bites, irregularly placed teeth). It includes diagnosis, prevention & correction of malpositioned teeth & jaws.

The prevalence of malocclusion in India has been observed to be ranging from 20%-43%(Journal of Dental Heath Oral Disorders & Therapy).

This treatment usually includes non surgical procedures but if malocclusion is very severe jaw surgery may be used. And extraction of teeth may also require to create space in severely crowded teeth cases.

Orthodontics treatment usually started before a person reaches adulthood since teeth can be easily moved in the bone.

This therapy can include use of fixed or removable appliances. The majority of treatment is delivered using fixed appliances as fixed appliances can have a greater mechanical control & treatment outcome.

BRACES -

  • Fixed appliances means braces are bonded to the teeth with adhesives to-
  • Rotate teeth, to move multiple teeth to different place, change root position.
  • Braces are usually placed on front side of teeth but may also be on inner side of teeth facing tongue (Lingual braces). Braces are made out of stainless steel or porcelain.
  • Brackets are bonded with adhesives and wires are placed in the slot of brackets.
  • Wires, elastics, bands & springs are used to create  force for controlled movement of teeth in all three directions.

CLEAR ALIGNERS are an alternative to braces.

Orthodontics treatment used to treat -

  •  Crowded teeth
  •  Space between teeth
  •  Forwardly or backwardly placed teeth
  •  Fully or partially impacted teeth
  •  Improving chewing and speech ability by treating improper bite.
  •  Boosting long term health of teeth and gum

DURATION -

Duration of treatment varies from person to person depending upon-

  •  Severity of problem
  •  Amount of room available
  •  Distance the teeth must move
  •  Health of teeth, gum and surrounding bones
  •  How closely the patient follows the instructions

After orthodontic treatment has completed there is a tendency for teeth to return or relapse or go back to their pre-treatment position to some extent.

To prevent the relapse majority of patient will be offered to wear retainer once treatment has completed.
